Santa Cruz Tells Eric Dressen’s Iconic Story in New Film ‚True Grit‘

I just have to say—this one was long overdue! From childhood skate prodigy to worldwide legend, there’s no one quite like Eric Dressen. Santa Cruz just released an epic 30-minute film about this skate icon, and it should be a mandatory watch for anyone who rolls on four wheels. Stop what you’re doing and press play:

„He has been there since the jump and is still in the van today,“ says Santa Cruz. Those 14 words say it all, but Dressen has never skated for the notoriety. He simply lives and breathes skateboarding, and since the beginning, brought a unique style to the culture that’s unmistakably his. Fast. Raw. No nonsense. True grit? Uh, yeah. Absolutely.

Dressen really has been a part of skateboarding longer than most legends can claim. Every decade. Think about that? I’ve always been a fan of Eric’s but after watching this documentary, I feel like a mega fan. Who would’ve thought this dude could get any cooler!?

Seriously, I’m not going to spoil anything for you, but find the time to watch this entire film. Joe Perrin did an incredible job on this project, along with anyone else who was involved. This was very much needed. From the 70s to now, Eric Dressen is as real as it can possibly get. No argument.

„There’s nobody that will ever skate like Eric Dressen,“ says Geoff Rowley. „He’s special.“

And I think I’ll just leave it at that.

EGGHEAD by AARON BIGELOW

“I went pro in art rather than skating,” Aaron Bigelow says as he tells us about his Egghead Featured Deck, “I’ve been an artist and a skateboarder since I was a kid… but always wanted to design my own deck. As I get older, I’m trying to put some footage together for a part while I still can with my coolest stuff. It’s going to be called Egghead. This board looks just like me but was inspired by an old World Industries Jovontae Turner deck, mine with a much less controversial idea, but the way my face fit on an egg deck was perfect. I was able to sneak text for my name, my mock company name, and egghead edition into my grey beard hair.” Follow Aaron on Instagram @theaaronbig for more skateboarding and art, or check out his website aaronbig.com.

Tom Asta Breaks Down the ‚Keys to Backside Bigspins‘ in New How-To Video

In Tom Asta’s latest How-To video, he shares his insights and thoughts on perfecting the backside bigspin before going over some of his own personal variations of the trick. This move is a must-have in any skateboarders bag of tricks! Let’s get it:

Personally, I like that Tom has taken the YouTube personality route these days. It’s tough, man. Not just anyone can do it. And it takes a lot of time to build not only a proper following, but the confidence to put yourself out there like this. But once you’ve put in the work long enough, the positivity from your audience pours in. Hey, it’s a new world—if you can’t beat ‚em, join ‚em!

Videos like this are actually really beneficial for so many reasons, too. Spend a few moments in the comments and you can see how genuinely appreciative folks (of all ages) are for pros like Tom to share their insights and techniques on certain tricks.

„I love how we can get personally taught by a pro and get their tips and insight into tricks. Coming from skating in the late 90’s I still feel blessed guys like Tom take their time to help others learn for free, it’s an awesome time to be a skateboarder,“ said one commenter.

Another mentioned, „Ayyy I’m 38 years old and because of your video I just landed on some of my first backside big spins (didn’t ride away tho) Thanks for the keys g! I’m riding away next session for sure.“

The list goes on, but I just thought that was rad.

There’s no denying Tom did an incredible job breaking it all down. Plus, if you already have bigspins on lock, it was a total bonus learning how bigspin front board, bigspin back tail and everything else. Good stuff.

Thanks for the lesson, Tom. Keep ‚em coming!

DIY Enthusiast Zack Dowdy Shares Latest Installment of ‚Building A Secret DIY Skatepark‘

How’s the saying go? If you want something done right, do it yourself. Well, safe to say ripping skateboarder, content creator, and DIY enthusiast Zack Dowdy knows this firsthand. If you’re familiar with his YouTube channel, you know his ‚Building A Secret DIY Skatepark‘ series is heavily adored. With 11 episodes under his belt, the latest installment is as good as ever. Check it out:

Honestly, just spend a little time in the comments and you’ll quickly realize Dowdy is genuinely inspiring countless skateboarders to get in the spirit and start building themselves.

„Really love these videos, I live in PR and theres a lot of potential for DIY here so I really hope I can do something like this some time soon.“

„Bro this series is soooo cool.. really enjoy watching it. Keep being you.“

„These are my favourite type of videos bud! Takes a while for one to upload but gotta appreciate every single one of em. Good stuff!“

„Probably my favorite series on YouTube, thanks man.“

But in my opinion, the thing that makes this series even more admirable is how Zack consistently touches on the importance of cleaning up your trash, respecting the spot, and obeying the unwritten ethics of DIY building. Honestly, we could all learn a thing or two from these videos!

And something tells me that’s sort of the point. Zack isn’t getting paid to do this, you know? He’s out there building these spots for the local community and at the same time, acting as a guiding light of inspiration all the same. This ain’t his first rodeo, either, and it surely won’t be his last.

For as long as I’ve known Zack, he’s always been playing with concrete. It’s so rad to see how talented he’s become over the years, literally by teaching himself and diving into the trenches headfirst. Skateboarding is his motivation, and that’s the way it should always be. And let me just say… the dude rips!

Keep building, Dowdy! We see you.

Watch Now: Screwyard’s Latest Full-Length Video ‚BLOSSOM‘ Is Here

Feast your eyes on a fresh wave of rising talent from the Bay Area and beyond in Screwyard’s latest video offering, ‚BLOSSOM‘ filmed and edited by Will Riemer. Is your board nearby? This one is gonna make you want to go skate. Check it out:

You might’ve seen Jake Hofmann’s part over on Vague, but the entire video is stacked! With clips from Jake, Cam Szabo, Kyle Dunlap, Calvin DeBruler, Jimmy Cascio, Jose 6, and more, it’s a fresh look at this ambitious crew. With so many talented skaters out there these days, it’s harder than ever to keep up. But this squad is certainly making their mark.

The skating speaks for itself here, but I have to give a shoutout to Will Riemer, the man behind the filming and editing. This clip has a vibe of its own and sort of gave me a feeling of nostalgia. Maybe it’s Hofmann’s part? Sort of reminiscent of an old TransWorld video or something? I don’t know for sure, but I’m a big fan.

At any rate, if you like homie videos, you’re in the right place. Raw, hungry talent at its finest! Big ups to all the skaters and everyone involved here. We’re stoked to see what Screwyard hits us with next.
