Kelsey Brookes x Beautiful Losers Skateboard Deck Collection Drops October 1

Beautiful Losers is back with another drop you’re going to want for your collection: New Psychedelia, a set of limited edition skateboards with acclaimed artist Kelsey Brookes. This collection is released on the occasion of his exhibition „Gradient Paintings,“ currently on view at Quint Gallery in La Jolla, California.

The Kelsey Brookes decks
What it says…

This collection is one run only and will not be made again. The order window opens October 1 and closes October 21.

The collection features Brooke’s signature and intricately detailed psychedelic paintings. Each skateboard is fully hand dipped in a base coat of lacquer, giving a sculptural quality to each piece. The collection is available individually and as a set.

Kelsey Brookes is a former scientist who uses his background in biological and empirical methodology to develop his studio practice. In his practice, Brookes adopts ideas found in logic and natural systems, such as molecular and atomic structures or number sequences, to build compositions that blur boundaries between the analytic and the creative. This approach drives the foundation of lively and colorful work that is both meticulously crafted and conceptually rigorous. His intricate paintings and sculptures find a unique balance within the juxtaposition of subjectivity and objectivity, as well as theory and aesthetic. Brookes dives into the discoveries of physicians, mathematicians, and chemists as only a scientist is capable, and, through the use of color and form, expresses this knowledge to the world in an abstract and luminous manner as only an artist is capable. Embodying an experimental nature that is mutual of science and art, Brookes is constantly growing his practice, whether it be through the exploration of unfamiliar media, or the employment of a new technique to further his study and anomalous presentation of biochemical substances.

Brookes has had solo exhibitions in La Jolla, Los Angeles, New York, Detroit, London and Berlin. His work was featured as the cover art for the Red Hot Chili Peppers‘ “I’m With You Sessions” (2013) records and The Flaming Lips‘ “The Time Has Come to Shoot You Down… What a Sound” LP (2013). His work belongs in esteemed private collections, as well as the public permanent collections of the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, and the Frederick R. Weisman Foundation, among others.

Here’s another Featured Deck from the Notre Dame San Jose Visual & Performing Arts program. This one from Olivia, who was inspired by Japanese and Irish heritage with her Celtic harp and koi fish graphic. This custom skateboard design was also pressed on the BoardPusher.com Silver base. As instructor Chris Johnson previously told us, the class researched the history of skateboarding and its art as well as target audiences for the custom graphics. Get Your First Look at the Limited OTW by Vans X Piet Parra Suede Half Cab

OTW by Vans has collaborated with renowned Dutch artist Piet Parra to revisit the iconic Vans Half Cab (which just so happened to be Parra’s go-to skate shoe in the early ‘90s when he skated professionally for Vans in the Netherlands) in a pretty unique way. Check these things out!

„The OTW by Vans x Piet Parra Suede Half Cab brings Parra’s signature vibrant aesthetic to life with contrasting premium suede panels, featuring fluid, undulating cutouts that distort the shoe’s original lines, reflecting the dynamic, organic style seen in Parra’s artwork,“ Vans mentions in the caption.

Honestly, say what you want, but I think these look so rad! They’re bold, bright and the way Curren makes them look while he’s skating in the video above was enough to officially seal the deal for me. That said, I have a feeling the majority of folks who purchase these probably aren’t going to skate them—but you should!

A little about Parra:

„Dutch artist Parra (1976) is best known for his surreal bird-like characters and distinctive use of saturated colours. His early work explored vibrant hand-drawn letters and humor, in recent years, his work has evolved into gorgeously layered abstract interpretations of his core figures.“

Now, the Half Cab has been „revisited“ countless times over the years, and in fairness, who can blame any of the folks who have been lucky enough to add their own personal touch to the iconic shoe? Style, function, comfort, durability—they’re simply good shoes. No debate. But I’m really liking Parra’s direction here. It’s a pretty refreshing approach, if you ask me. And this also isn’t the first time Vans has worked with the Dutch artist.

The shoes are officially available today, September 24th on otw.vans.com. I know they might not be for everyone, but keep in mind—they are limited. If you want a pair, you should get on it. Skate ‚em or don’t, that’s on you. Oh, and just FYI, even the box they come in is sick. GTWYC!

From the LA Streets: Trey Wade’s ‚Quick Cuts‘ for Pepper Grip Packs a Serious Punch

We’re used to short but sweet edits these days, but this new ‚Quick Cuts‘ clip from Trey Wade for Pepper Grip packs a serious punch! Between his impressive pop and smooth style, Trey didn’t skip a beat and absolutely delivered here. Take a look:

„Trey Wade left Austin, Texas for the Summer and came to Los Angeles for a stint in the sweltering streets to bring this Quick Cut to life,“ Pepper mentioned in the description. Tacking on, „Trey rides our Pepper G5 black formula grip exclusively,“ for good measure.

The Pepper team is stacked! Trey’s certainly in good company rolling around with this squad and for good reason. Technical ledge lines, switch skills that would make anyone a little envious and an eye for unique spots all the same—Trey definitely didn’t waste any time during this visit. Solid stuff!

Look for Pepper grip at your local shop or online at mesaskatesupply.com.
